FCAT

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Today is the last day of FCAT! FCAT stands for Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. If you ask Anuhea (who was just joking about it the other day), then she'll say FCAT stands for Florida Child Abuse Test. :) We had a good laugh about that one.

All 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders (and students in higher grades) need to take the test so that includes Anuhea and Nalani. They have been taking the tests for a week now.

I think the girls will be glad the tests are over, but they'll miss not having to do homework every day. Because of the testing, they haven't had homework for a whole week! Luckily, they'll be having Spring Break soon and shouldn't have any homework then. This is so unlike school in Taiwan where they think the breaks give you more time to do homework so they pile it on.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all ye Irish out there (and to those who just want to celebrate)!

Hokulani's class had a project to make a leprechaun trap, using a shoe box and other non-dangerous items. We helped her make the trap and she turned it in on Friday so she could try to trap the leprechaun today.

Hokulani came home with her trap and said, "The leprechaun didn't take the gold." (The gold in the box was made from old necklaces we got from the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. I cut the string so they'd be in pieces. See the cup in the box?) I told her that we didn't want it to take the gold. We just wanted to trap the leprechaun. Unfortunately, she didn't catch the leprechaun, but she got 2 gold coins (play coins), and was happy about that.

Horton Hears a Who

Saturday, March 15, 2008

I took the children to see the new movie, Horton Hears a Who, at the theater.

We went this evening after I had had a chance to rest and we ate dinner. Jason was tired so he opted out. We were lucky to receive 2 movie tickets (coupons) for Christmas so we only had to pay for 2 out of the 4 of us.

We enjoyed the movie. It was very funny. I was glad it was nothing like The Cat in the Hat, because I didn't like that movie very much.

PiPa

Saturday, March 15, 2008

Jason took the children to Chinese school because I was tired from taking the GRE and driving. When they were leaving the school they found a bush or plant that grows PiPa (sounds like pee-pah). Here's a picture of it.

PiPa is a small fruit. You carefully peel the thin layer of skin off and eat the middle. It's amazing that the fruit is so small (about the size of an olive), and it still has 2-3 seeds (about the size of a popcorn kernel) inside.

Nalani is the fruit lover so she ate almost all of the fruit. Fortunately, the rest of us were able to try at least one.

It's over. . .for now!

I took the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) today. It was 4 hours long and very difficult for me. I didn't prepare as well as I should have, but I did get some studying in and had some idea of what to expect. Still, I struggled with the exam.

The writing section was easier than the other sections, but I won't find out how I did on that part until later. I couldn't remember how to do most of the math problems, and had difficulty with the antonyms (for words I didn't even know!) and word associations (also for words I didn't know). I am so thankful for the exam to be finished. Unfortunately, I'll need to take it again at some time because I didn't score very well. :(

Now that we're having a baby I won't be trying to get into Graduate school for a while. I was planning to get my Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education, but that's on hold for now. When the time comes to try again, then I will need to take a GRE preparation course for a chance at better scores so I can get into the program I want.

Artistic Anuhea

Anuhea is very talented, especially in visual arts. She still needs to get some instruction, but she does a great job anyway. Here are some pictures she did with oil pastels she got for her birthday.

We think they're beautiful!

Caterpillar in the house!

Thursday, March 6, 2008

I, Carmel, was just minding my own business when I saw something small and fuzzy moving on the floor. I was walking to the desk to my computer, and out from under the TV we use to play Wii came a caterpillar. It had some dust on it from under the TV.

We think it's the Woolly Bear Caterpillar. If it is, then it will turn into a Tiger Moth sometime. I put it in a jar for the children to see, then Nalani released it outside. It quickly crawled to the plants.

Now why was a caterpillar in the house? That's the same question I had when I found a small snake in our house last year!

Campout

February 29 & March 1, 2008

We had a campout in our living room. We had planned to do it in the beginning of the week, and Hokulani couldn't wait for Friday to come.

Jason--Mr. Muscles--carried each of our mattresses to the living room since we don't have any carpet. Carmel got all of the bedding. We watched a movie--Chicken Little--and ate popcorn before going to bed.

Nalani and Hokulani wanted to keep sleeping in the living room, but we told them the campout was over (on Sunday). They were very disappointed.
