Ducks

April 2, 2008

What a surprise Jason got when he looked out our back door and saw 2 ducks! They were just wandering along the forest edge across the ditch in our back yard.

Deer sighting

September 16, 2007

Every morning I open our sliding glass door blinds. It helps bring in light, and I'm hopeful of seeing some animals in our backyard. We were busy getting ready for church on this particular morning. I was checking on the children to be sure they were getting dressed. When I walked back into the living room, I looked out the back door (the sliding glass door) and saw it.

I quickly and excitedly called the children to come to the living room. Jason also came from our room, thinking I saw a spider or cockroach or something. I was amazed by the prompt reply to my calling. I told everyone to look outside, and there was a deer outside our back yard. It was right over the ditch, eating leaves off a tree. I grabbed my camera--I was ready this time--and went closer to the door to get a picture of it.

I didn't realize that there were actually 2 deer outside. One was IN our backyard, and when I went near the door it ran toward the trees. Unfortunately, I scared it and the other "eating" deer looked straight at me. I quickly took my pictures, then Nalani walked to me, and the deer ran off into the trees.

Can you sense how excited I was to see the deer? I look outside every day just in case some animals are there. Jason said we'd see deer when it gets cooler, and this was the cooler day. I love being here!

Animal sighting!

September 11, 2007

This morning I spotted 2 raccoons in our backyard! I was going about straightening up the house when I looked out the back door (thankfully, I had the curtains open so I could see out there). I saw the raccoons headed for the forest behind our house. I quickly grabbed my camera, but had to change the batteries. When I turned around with fresh batteries added to the camera, the raccoons were already walking into the shrubbery and trees. Too late!
I was so excited to see real raccoons, because I don't think I've ever seen any except on t.v. or in pictures.
Here's a link to a picture of a raccoon since I wasn't able to get one.

Possum

September 2, 2007

Last night we were driving home through our neighborhood when I saw what looked like an ugly cat at the edge of someone's driveway. I wondered why there was a cat outside because I had never seen cats roaming around our neighborhood, whether owned or stray.

As we got closer to the "ugly cat," it ran away. At first Jason thought it was an armadillo (there are many here--usually dead on the road). We later realized that it was a possum. I was surprised to find out that there are possums running around the neighborhood. Yuck!

Sorry, no pictures of "ugly cat", but here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Possum.
