Discovery Space Shuttle

May 31, 2008

We were fortunate to watch the Discovery Space Shuttle launch LIVE at 5:02pm Eastern time. We were in Port Canaveral, not the Kennedy Space Center, but had a great view of the launch.

In the morning the children and Carmel prepared Spam Musubi for snack or dinner. It was delicious!

Nalani and Hokulani helped Carmel make Rice Krispies treats for snack. Mmm.

We weren't able to get into Jetty Park to watch the launch so we stopped at Portside Galley. It's a breakfast & lunch restaurant. We needed to be sure to find a place to use the bathroom before we got stuck for the rest of the afternoon without one. We went into the restaurant and ended up getting lunch, even though we had eaten lunch at home before leaving home.

Even though Portside Galley closed at 2pm, we stayed in the parking lot to wait for 5:02pm to come along for the launch. While we were waiting we saw this cruise ship leaving the port. It was huge! We could also see the people all along the top of the ship. We weren't far from the ship, but the people still looked tiny.

We were so hot as we waited for the shuttle to launch, but were lucky to have a breeze. Nalani and Hokulani didn't know what to do with themselves, but they kept busy talking and playing together. Jason and Anuhea talked to some people on the phone. Later, Jason and Carmel tried to get some rest.

Finally, the moment had come! At exactly 5:02pm the shuttle launched! We weren't sure exactly where to look for the launch, but knew the general area. We knew as soon as we saw the fire from the shuttle thrusters where to look.

This is the smoke trail after we lost sight of the shuttle:

We decided to leave as soon as we couldn't see the shuttle anymore. We didn't want to get stuck with all the traffic that would be leaving from the park and other areas. Well, we weren't lucky enough. Look at all the cars! This was the bridge that took us over Indian River Lagoon, from the Cocoa area back to Orlando. It took us 2 hours (instead of the normal 1 hour) to get home!

Here's a picture of the Indian River Lagoon sign to show where we were:

This is a picture of the lagoon, and all the boats in the lagoon:
